Luka, Finally: The 2-0 Blazers Take Their First Real Test in L.A.

TONIGHT · @ LAKERS · 8 PM PT · NBC/PEACOCK

GAME DAY. The 2-0 Blazers finish their two-game trip tonight at the 3-0 Lakers, 8 p.m. PT at Crypto.com Arena. It's a national NBC/Peacock game, so it's not on BlazerVision or KUNP. It's also the first time in a long while Portland actually sees Luka Doncic: NBA.com's John Schuhmann notes Doncic has sat out his last seven matchups against the Blazers.

The pregame package

Line: Lakers -2.5, total 233.5 (DraftKings, via ESPN). Moneyline L.A. -135, Portland +114. ESPN's Matchup Predictor has it 52.4% L.A. Schedule spot: L.A. plays the Clippers on Wednesday, so this is the front end of a back-to-back. Portland hasn't played since Friday.

Confirmed Uniforms: NBA LockerVision (checked this morning) has Portland in the white Association Edition and L.A. in its purple Statement Edition, with a white LAKERS wordmark edged in gold, white numbers and white-and-gold trim.

Injury report

Confirmed Portland: Scoot Henderson (left ankle soreness) is a new addition and is questionable. Branden Carlson was upgraded from out to questionable and is still in concussion protocol. Shaedon Sharpe (right meniscus surgery) is out. Two-way players Jayson Kent, John Tonje and Chris Youngblood are out on G League duty (official NBA injury report; Blazer's Edge's Conor Bergin). Henderson has come off the bench in both games. He's averaging 9.5 points on 38.1% shooting and 11.1% from three (ClutchPoints), and he went 1-for-7 in 21 minutes at Sacramento. If he sits, NBC Sports' Raphielle Johnson suggests Vít Krejčí could pick up minutes. RotoWire says the call likely comes after shootaround and warmups.

Confirmed Lakers: Adou Thiero (left knee swelling) and Cameron Carr (right oblique strain) are out. Walker Kessler is available and listed with a left finger splint (official NBA injury report).

Four keys

1) Make the glass decide it. Per ESPN team stats, Portland averages 50.5 rebounds and L.A. averages 37.0. Utah just had 52 rebounds against the Lakers, including 20 offensive, plus 34 second-chance points and 58 in the paint (Nicole Ganglani, via Yahoo Sports). That's the formula.

2) One defender on Luka, then send help late. Doncic is averaging 34.3 points, 8.0 assists and 7.3 rebounds (AP) and scored 52 on 17-of-30 shooting (8-of-18 from three) Sunday. Before Utah, he was averaging 25.5 on 38.5% shooting and had a career-high 11 turnovers against the Clippers (Tony Carter, Roundtable). Austin Reaves is averaging 26.7 (AP). Carter wants Toumani Camara on Doncic first with Jrue Holiday as the change-up. Ganglani expects Holiday and Camara on Doncic and Reaves.

3) Jam Kessler's roll. Kessler went 12-for-12 for 26 points in the opener, then had two points on two shots at Utah (Tony Carter, Roundtable). If Clingan keeps him off the rim, Doncic has to win from the midrange.

4) Start fast, then trust the 10. Schuhmann's number: the Lillard-Morant starting group has outscored opponents by 30 in a little more than 18 minutes, and those opponents are 1-for-12 from three against it. Then it's Micah Nori's depth argument. "The depth is why I think we're an awfully good ballclub, quite honestly," Nori said (AP). L.A. is turning it over 16.3 times a game (ESPN). Speed the Lakers up on the first night of a back-to-back.

Tale of the tape

ESPN's team numbers: Lakers 128.0 points per game and 115.0 allowed, shooting 55% overall and 42% from three. Blazers 126.0 and 101.5 allowed, shooting 48% and 35%. Portland averages 31.0 assists to L.A.'s 25.3, and the Lakers block 6.7 shots a game. The last three meetings: Portland won 122-108 exactly a year ago today, on Oct. 27, 2025, and L.A. won 123-115 on Nov. 3, 2025 and 132-116 on Jan. 17, 2026 (AP).

Standings check

Per ESPN, Portland is 2-0 and fifth in the West, one game behind the three 4-0 teams: Houston, Oklahoma City and Memphis. The Lakers are 3-0. Monday's results: Memphis won 110-105 at Utah, OKC beat Phoenix 125-114, Houston beat Atlanta 120-110, Golden State won 134-114 at Denver, Cleveland edged Minnesota 127-125, and Dallas won 113-109 at Miami. Thursday's opponent, Memphis, is unbeaten. Ty Jerome and Tyrese Maxey were named NBA Players of the Week.

The option clock: the real deadline is Nov. 2

Confirmed A correction to our last two dispatches: the rookie-scale option deadline isn't Oct. 31 this year. Hoops Rumors' Luke Adams points out that Oct. 31 falls on a Saturday, which pushes the deadline to the next business day, Monday, Nov. 2. As of this morning, neither Portland option has been exercised: Donovan Clingan's fourth-year ($9,550,298) or Yang Hansen's third-year ($4,864,920) (Hoops Rumors; Spotrac). Around the league, New Orleans declined AJ Johnson's option, and Atlanta and Charlotte waived Devin Carter and Rob Dillingham before their decisions (Hoops Rumors).

West shake-up

Confirmed Oklahoma City's Jalen Williams has a fractured left fibula and a dislocated left ankle. Cason Wallace has a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Both need surgery, and Thunder GM Sam Presti said there's no timeline until afterward (AP). ESPN's Shams Charania reported both are out for "most, if not the entire season." Stein noted Wallace's injury came a week after his five-year, $139 million extension. Presti: "It's not for the faint of heart — this league."

Lakers side

Confirmed ESPN's Ramona Shelburne has the inside story on the 72-hour, $12.5 billion sale of the Lakers from Mark Walter to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. Lakers Nation notes the Board of Governors hasn't approved it yet and a vote is expected in November. Coach JJ Redick on Doncic's 52: "When he's in the flow state, he gets into showman mode" (AP). LeBron James left in the offseason, so this is Doncic's team now (AP).

Rumor Mill

Since Monday, Charania, Stein and Jake Fischer have reported nothing new involving Portland. Rumor Charania has reported that Golden State is exploring Kristaps Porzingis trades. Kyler Fox (Roundtable) argues Portland should stay out of it. His Robert Williams III-plus-Krejčí salary match is his own hypothetical, not a reported negotiation, and Williams isn't trade-eligible until Dec. 30. Rumor The standing item hasn't changed: Dwight Jaynes says Travis Demers has a full-season TV deal, while The Oregonian reported a trial basis.

Small stuff & media notes

The Box is dead. Long live the gloves. The Oregonian's Joe Freeman has the story of Nori's new postgame award, "The Knockout Punch." It's a pair of red Cleto Reyes boxing gloves that replaces "The Box." Lillard won it in the opener and Camara won it in Sacramento. At season's end, the leader gets Mayweather-signed gloves, arranged through Courtney Watson. Camara's verdict: "I think it's dope." Lillard, unplugged: He told NBC News' Rohan Nadkarni, "I don't regret any part of the journey. I feel like it was all necessary." Stat to watch: Blazer's Edge's Dave Deckard is tracking assisted threes. Portland is shooting 34.7% from deep. Power rankings: Schuhmann moved Portland from 19th to 15th and named the Blazers his team to watch, since they play two of Week 2's three unbeaten-vs-unbeaten games. Team feed: The Blazers' account posted "quick business trip to LA 🛫" Monday and was already promoting Thursday's Memphis game with "Old friends. Familiar faces." That's Ja Morant's former team.
